KPK Arrests Regional Head in North Penajam Paser, Candidate for New State Capital

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) conducted an arrest operation against a regional head in North Penajam Paser Regency, East Kalimantan, which is a candidate for the new state capital.

The arrests were related to the alleged receipt of bribes or gratuities. Meanwhile, North Penajam Paser was led by Regent Abdul Gafur Mas'ud. He was allegedly arrested in a series of arrests in Jakarta and North Penajam Paser. Apart from Abdul Gafur, the private sector was also arrested. This arrest is the KPK's second OTT in January 2022. Last week, the KPK also arrested the Mayor of Bekasi Rahmat Effendi in connection with cases of alleged bribery and project gratification and job auctions. Deputy Chairperson of the KPK, Nurul Ghufron, in Jakarta, confirmed that the KPK carried out an operation to arrest state officials in North Penajam Paser Regency, East Kalimantan. OTT is carried out on suspicion of receiving bribes and or gratuities. However, more detailed information regarding the alleged corruption cannot be disclosed to the public because the KPK is still conducting an intensive examination for 1 x 24 hours to clarify the situation. "We ask the public to be patient and give the KPK team the opportunity to work on investigating this case. Furthermore, later we will provide more comprehensive information," said Nurul in a written statement. North Penajam Paser Regency is an area in East Kalimantan Province which, according to the plan, will be used as the location for the new state capital. Currently, the legislators, namely the government and the DPR, are intensively discussing the regulations for the megaproject development. The legislators are targeting that the State Capital Bill can be completed in early 2022.
