Reduced Handling of Natural Resources Corruption

The decline in the performance of the Corruption Eradication Commission has an impact on the handling of natural resource cases.
Evaluations by Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW), the Center for Anti-Corruption Studies at Gadjah Mada University (Pukat UGM), and Transparency International Indonesia (TII) show that over the past two years, the KPK has rarely touched this sector. "In fact, based on the 2012-2023 KPK roadmap document, natural resources are included in a strategic sector that needs to be addressed by the KPK," said ICW researcher Kurnia Ramadhana, in Jakarta, yesterday. He said that one important KPK program that had begun to recede was the National Movement to Save Natural Resources or GNPSDA. The program covers governance improvements, from licensing to incentives to accelerate policy implementation. All of these efforts, said Kurnia, are ultimately aimed at minimizing opportunities for corruption and saving state finances. According to Kurnia, there are still many actors who are looking for profit in the midst of the complexity of governance issues in the natural resources sector. One of them is coal mining. Constitutional law expert Bivitri Susanti said the weakening of the KPK was carried out legally. Not only the KPK, the weakening of the DPR, civil society, and the Constitutional Court was also carried out. With the reduced spurs of these four lines of supervision, control over power no longer exists. "What we are seeing is part of a big scenario. The government is controlled by one person and few people," he said. According to Bivitri, the ultimate goal of autocratic legalism is not to revise the KPK Law, but to facilitate economic activities for the benefit of the authorities.
