Bappenas Describes RI's Biggest Challenges in Transitioning to a Green Economy
The National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) describes the challenges Indonesia faces in its transition to a green economy.
Deputy for Economics at Bappenas Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti revealed that one of the biggest challenges is the dependence of the economy and exports on coal which makes it difficult for Indonesia to switch to the use of New and Renewable Energy (EBT). "If we look at the share of our non-oil and gas exports, one of them that contributes the most is coal and crude palm oil. But then if we look at the energy sector, some of them still use coal as their energy," said Widyasanti, who is familiar with called Winnie, at the webinar Indonesia's Green Jobs Conference which was held . If we examine more deeply, some provinces still depend on the coal mining sector for their economy. This is because the price of coal energy is relatively cheaper than NRE. "The market still believes that coal is a relatively cheap energy source and therefore of course research and development for us to be able to obtain cheaper renewable energy technologies will be a big challenge in the future," he said.
